Food Waste Infographic (Text-only version)

This is a text-only version of the infographic included in the story “From Scraps to Systems Change: How 911±¬ÁÏ Students Launched a Successful Food Waste Diversion Initiative”.

The graphic is divided into four panels, from left to right. The background of the graphic is green, and the graphic contains both text and colorful inset illustrations.

The first panel includes a stylized illustration of food waste, including portions of a chicken thigh, a tomato slice, and a pear. The text reads: “911±¬ÁÏ’s front-of-house food waste collection diverted over 105,000 pounds of food from the landfill, sending it to be composted and saving the equivalent of 64.67 metric tons of CO2 emissions, the equivalent of driving over 164,558 miles in an average gas-powered vehicle.”

The second panel includes a stylized illustration of a forested hill. The text reads: “Rhode Island’s only landfill will reach capacity by 2046, with approximately 40% of that waste made up of compostable material.”

The third panel text reads: “In the 2022-23 academic year, back-of-house food waste collection diverted five tons of food waste. In 2024-25, adding front-of-house food waste diversion increased that number to more than 32 tons–a 540% increase.” The panel includes an illustration comparing the amount of waste diverted in 2023 versus 2025. One waste collection bin represents the waste diverted in 2023, while six waste collection bins represent the waste diverted in 2025.

The fourth panel text reads: “In fall 2025, approximately 85% of students eating in Butterfield and Mainfare dining halls participated in food waste diversion by emptying compostable waste into ReMix bins.” The panel includes an illustration depicting the percentage of students participating in food waste diversion. One hundred silhouettes of people are arranged in a grid, with 85 silhouettes shaded in blue and 15 shaded in red.
