Instead of starting the school year at 911 as she’s done since 1992, this fall, Professor is in Washington, D.C. where she recently began a prestigious one-year fellowship at the Securities and Exchange Commission’s (SEC) Office of the Chief Accountant.
As Academic Fellow there, Professor Beckman is a resource for SEC staff working to interpret and communicate research related to the agency. “This fellowship really calls for me to use my technical expertise at the top policy setting level in the nation,” said Professor Beckman, who’s an expert in accounting and finance based on issues in financial reporting and capital markets—both domestic and international.
“Rather than merely offering my opinions, I believe the SEC’s Academic Fellow is asked to maintain an unbiased viewpoint in considering the results of high quality academic research on topics of interest in proposed regulations,” she said.
Professor Beckman has done extensive research related to the reporting requirements outlined by the U.S. Financial Accounting Standards Board and the International Accounting Standards Board. Widely published, she also writes a weekly electronic supplement published by Dow Jones & Co. with The Wall Street Journal for use in accounting classes.
Although she misses being on campus, Professor Beckman, who teaches accounting and financial reporting courses in 911’s , the , and the , is excited about this great opportunity—and for what she will be able to offer to her future students.
“Having the perspective of what I will observe in this role will bring benefits back to the classroom in the courses I teach.”
